Spring is the perfect time to hit the road in your motorhome or caravan. The weather is milder, nature is waking up, and campsites start to buzz with activity again. But before you set off, a thorough checklist can save you from unexpected troubles and help you enjoy your trip fully. I’ve put together a practical guide to prepare your motorhome or caravan for spring travel, based on my own experiences and tips from fellow travellers.

Check Your Vehicle Inside and Out

Spring means a fresh start, but your motorhome or caravan might have spent months parked and unused. Start with a detailed inspection:

  • Exterior condition: Look for cracks, leaks, or damage to the roof, windows, and seals. Spring rains can reveal weak spots.

  • Tires: Check tread depth and pressure. Cold weather can cause tires to lose air, so inflate them to the recommended level.

  • Lights and signals: Test headlights, brake lights, and indicators to ensure safety on the road.

  • Battery: Cold weather can drain batteries. Test your motorhome or caravan battery and recharge or replace it if needed.

  • Underneath: Inspect the chassis and suspension for rust or damage from winter conditions.

Inside, check for any signs of damp or mold, especially around windows and in storage compartments. Clean and air out the interior to prevent musty smells.

Service and Safety Essentials

Before you hit the road, servicing your motorhome or caravan is crucial:

  • Engine and fluids: Change oil, coolant, and brake fluid if due. Check levels of windshield washer fluid and top up.

  • Brakes: Test brake pads and discs. Spring roads can be slippery, so brakes must be reliable.

  • Gas and propane: Inspect gas lines and cylinders for leaks. Test your stove and heating system to ensure they work safely.

  • Fire safety: Check fire extinguishers, smoke alarms, and carbon monoxide detectors. Replace batteries if needed.

  • First aid kit: Restock any used or expired items and add insect repellent and allergy medication for spring.

Stock Up on Travel and Camping Gear

Spring weather can be unpredictable, so pack smart:

  • Clothing: Layered clothes, waterproof jackets, and sturdy shoes for hiking or exploring.

  • Outdoor gear: Folding chairs, picnic blankets, and a portable grill for enjoying the outdoors.

  • Tools and spares: Basic tool kit, spare fuses, bulbs, and duct tape for quick fixes.

  • Navigation: Updated maps or GPS devices, plus a list of campsites and service points along your route.

  • Cleaning supplies: Keep your motorhome or caravan tidy with eco-friendly cleaners and microfiber cloths.

Plan Your Route and Campsites

Spring is a popular season for motorhome and caravan travelers, so planning ahead helps avoid full sites:

  • Research campsites that open early in the season and offer spring activities.

  • Check local weather forecasts and road conditions.

  • Consider quieter spots if you prefer peaceful nature over busy campgrounds.

  • Make reservations where possible to secure your spot.
